Inca Spyder 320 helps Reads write another growth chapter

You cannot travel too far around Adelaide without coming across signage that has been produced by Read Brothers. “We cover a very broad spectrum of work,” explains Ashley Read. “From interior displays to exterior pylon signs as well as a huge amount of vehicle graphics. We screen print corflute signs, self-adhesive stickers, metal signs and a variety of plastics.

Read Brothers Signs is made up of three sections: signmaking and installation, screen printing and digital printing.” Ashley Read and his brothers, Darren and Andrew, began the business 21 years ago, starting from a home shed. They now employ 16 full-time staff and operate from a 1350sqm premises at Thebarton on the outskirts of Adelaide city. The brothers have witnessed many changes in the industry. “Today, customers are demanding a lot more than they ever have,” says Ashley. “They want and expect a quality product that doesn’t cost the earth. They want it faster than ever before. More than ever, the runs have become shorter and a good deal of the product needs to be personalised.”

The brothers believe their business will continue to grow by embracing new technology to service their clients. This led the boys to the Inca Spyder 320 – 8 Series.

More inks give more choice

Ashley’s first contact with the Inca Spyder was at a trade show. “I had met Matthew Philp previously, and meeting him again after his move to Fujifilm Sericol while exhibiting the Spyder at Visual Impact, I was convinced this was the machine to have. “We talked to a lot of people during the decision process and not one person could say anything bad about it, from existing owners to its competition.”

The 8 Series is the latest extension to the popular Spyder 320 range, delivering 8-colour printing and the capability to specify which combination of colours are most suited to your business. In addition to the standard CMYK four process colour inks is a selection of modules from light magenta, light cyan, orange, violet and white. The wider gamut enables some difficult colours to be achieved, as well as offering white, which can be used as an overprint, underprint, or spot colour layer.

Ashley is enthusiastic about their new purchase. “To me the Inca Spyder has been the proven leader of this type of equipment in the market place for quite a few years. When I first looked at this machine I could see the potential for our business.” The brothers chose the Spyder 320 – 8 Series for a number of reasons: print speed, print quality, ease of use, proven track record, back-up support and that its small footprint doesn’t consume their entire workshop.

The Inca Spyder, along with their other machines, now tie together the two traditional areas of their business (sign making and screen printing) as well as giving potential for growth and the ability to service their customers to a higher level.

“Our relationship with Fujifilm Sericol goes back a long way,” says Ashley. “Nothing was too hard for any of the team we dealt with, from initial discussions with Paul Budgen, technical information from Matthew Philp and even the follow up involving local branch manager Dennis Cocks.

Ashley is convinced the Spyder 320 – 8 Series plays an important role in that plan. “So far everyone who has seen the Spyder and the results it produces has been very impressed.”
